Itinerary
Iceland on Horseback - Wild Highlands
9 days - Aug-Sep - From US $ 2,460
Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
You will be transferred from Keflavík Airport to a guesthouse in Reykjavík for a welcome meeting that will include traditional Icelandic soup, details of your tour, and the chance to meet your fellow riders.
Day 2: Reykjavík - Kjóastaðir Farm
After driving to Kjóastaðir Farm and visiting the historical site of Thingvellir and the well-known geyser hot spring area, your ride will start as you head toward the majestic glacier Langjökull onto Haukadalsheiði heath. You will leave the horses at Sandá River for the night. On your way back to Kjóastaðir Farm, a stop will be made at the beautiful Gullfoss Waterfall. The night will be spent in several summer houses. Showers and an outdoor hot tub will be available onsite. (30 km/18.6 mi)
Day 3: Kjóastaðir Farm - Árbúðir Mountain Cabin
The ride will continue along the slopes of Mt. Bláfell--this area was roamed by outlaws in the old days. To be on the safe side, you might want to take a little stone along today as a special token for safety during the ride--you might need it later... As you cross River Hvítá, you can enjoy the view of the glacier fed Lake Hvítárvatn and its floating icebergs. Tonight, you will stay at Árbúðir, situated on the banks of river Svartá. (30 km/18.6 mi)
Day 4: Árbúðir Mountain Cabin - Svartárbotnar Mountain Cabin
You will explore Lake Hvítárvatn closer and ride without the herd toward this magnificent lake emerging from Langjökull Glacier. Upon returning to the herd, you will continue the ride along Svartá River, passing through the Gránunes Area. The area was named after the horse Grána, and you will hear about a tragic story which happened centuries ago. The day will end at the Svartárbotnar Mountain Cabin, a new cabin with a warm shower. (30 km/18.6 mi)
Day 5: Svartárbotnar Mountain Cabin - Hveravellir
Today, you will ride along the huge rugged lava fields of Kjalhraun that the sure-footed Icelandic horses will master with such bravery. During the ride you can enjoy splendid views of the glacier Langjökull and follow the glacier fed river Fúlakvísl. You will then leave the herd for a couple of hours to enter into the world of Thjófadalir, or Valley of Thieves, a grassy valley surrounded by high mountains, a true oasis in the wilderness. Then, it will be on to Hveravellir, a unique geothermal area between the Hofsjökull and Langjökull glaciers. A natural hot pool will invite you to a deserved relaxing bath. (40 km/24.8 mi)
Day 6: Hveravellir - Galtará Mountain Cabin
This day will be a very special one. You will cross Blanda, Svartakvísl and Strangakvísl (large glacier rivers) on your way to the north. No need to worry, most Icelanders would rather choose a trusted Icelandic horse than a vehicle to cross a river! The location of tonight's mountain cabin will offer great views of the big glaciers behind you, and toward the high mountains of the north ahead of you. Up to mid-July, the sun hardly sets in this part of the country. From the mountain cabin Galtará, you can overlook the big man-made Lake Blönduvatn. (45 km/27.9 mi)
Day 7: Galtará Mountain Cabin - Lauftún Holiday Farm
You will descend past beautiful Lake Aðalmannsvatn toward the fertile Mælifellsdalur Valley in the Skagafjörður area. You can enjoy endless herds of horses grazing on the striking hills and, in good weather conditions, you will be able to see all the way to the Atlantic Ocean on the north coast. Good riding tracks will give you the opportunity to enjoy a fast ride. The day will end at Lauftún Holiday Farm with a hot tub heated with geothermal water. (40 km/24.8 mi)
Day 8: Reykjavík
You will transfer back to Reykjavík for your last overnight stay.
Day 9: Departure from Iceland
After being transferred by bus to the Keflavík Airport, you will take a return flight home.
