Iceland on Horseback - Snaefellsnes

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
After being transferred from the Keflavík Airport to a guesthouse in Reykjavík you will participate in a welcome meeting that will include traditional Icelandic soup, details of the tour, and a chance to meet your fellow riders.

Day 2: Grímsstadir Farm - Stóri-Kálfalaekur Farm
After a morning transfer to Stóri-Kálfalaekur Farm, and an introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits, you will start the ride into the mountains through fertile farmlands, and along good riding tracks. You will be heading to Grímsstadir Farm--its proud history dates back to medieval times. Overnight will be at Stóri-Kálfalaekur with made-up beds, showers and a hot tub onsite. (30 km/18.6 mi)

Day 3: Hítardalur - Stóri-Kálfalaekur Farm
The ride today will lead through multicolored mountains and along low bushy hillsides. Hítardalur is a geological paradise full of vast lava fields, soft tracks through ashes, and the high palagonite (tuff) mountains that give the impression of taking a ride on the moon. You will leave the horses atnHítarhólmur and drive back to Stóri-Kálfalaekur, where the hot tub will be waiting. (30 km/18.6 mi)

Day 4: Hítardalsrétt - Laugagerdi Schoolhouse
The ride will continue through a mystical volcanic valley. You will stop at Hítardalsrétt, a sheep gathering place, and may even see the troll woman Hít, who was turned into stone returning late from a date. As you proceed west across Hítará, you will travel trough an area well-known as the hideout of Iceland's most famous outlaw, Grettir. At Kolviđarnes Farm, you will leave the horses and spend the night at Laugagerdi Schoolhouse, where you can take a swim in a pool heated with geothermal water. (45 km/27.9)

Day 5: Löngufjörur - Hof Farm
After rejoining the horses, you will start with a beach ride on Löngufjörur, the famous horse trail on the seashores of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. You can see majestic Snaefellsjökull glacier and feel the horses' excitement as you take part in their joy on this extraordinary trail released by the tide. The horses will spend the night at Tradir Farm, while you will stay at Hof Farm, with a geothermal hot tub onsite. (40 km/24.8 mi)

You will drive along the coast towards the romantic fishing villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, right underneath magical Mt. Snćfellsjökull. After visiting the Information center of the Snćfellsnes National Park and learning about its mysterious powers, you can view beautiful bird cliffs along the shore, shaped by powerful waves. You will then meet giant Bárđur Snćfellsás and hear about historic celebrities like the far-traveled Guđríđur Ţorbjarnardóttir and mass murderer Axlar-Björn.

Day 6: Kolvidarnes Farm - Stóri-Kálfalaekur Farm
Today will present another ride on the yellow-colored, sandy beach. You will change direction and head back toward the mighty Eldborgarhraun lava field, which will present a unique experience for everyone--with lava fields and mountains on one side of the trail, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. You will leave the horses at Kolvidarnes Farm and drive to Stóri-Kálfalaekur. (40 km/24.8 mi)

Day 7: Eldborgarhraun - Stóri-Kálfalaekur Farm
The last day on the beach will present still a new experience. The sand will begin to turn black as you follow the outline of Eldborgarhraun lava field, and you can imagine the black lava still on the move as you make your way back to dry land. The ride will end at Stóri-Kálfalaekur Farm, where you will enjoy Ólöf's farewell dinner. (30 km/18.6 mi)

Day 8: Reykjavík
After transferring back to Reykjavík, you will stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Day 9: Departure from Iceland
You will be transferred by bus to Keflavík Airport in time for your flight back home.

Knee-high rubber boots are recommended for the beach ride.
