Iceland on Horseback - Old Sagas

Day 1: Hvammur - Vatnsdalur - Thingeyrar
You will be transferred by bus from Reykjavík to Hvammur Farm, where you will meet your horses and guides. The ride will begin as you travel through the Vatnsdalur valley, the beautiful setting of the Vatnsdæla Saga. The day's ride will take you along the banks of the River Vatnsdalsá before ending at the historic Thingeyrar Farm. You will then return to Hvammur Farm for an overnight stay. (25 km/15.5 mi)

Day 2: Hvammur - Borgarvirki - Hotel Hóp
As you ride on the Thingeyrasandur sandbar toward Lake Hóp, you can feel the excitement of the horses as they reach the open plain. The trail will lead you on a safe track across Lake Hóp, Iceland's fifth biggest lake, which will create a memorable adventure. On dry land, you will visit Borgarvirki, a fascinating fortress from the Viking era. You will stay at Hotel Hóp, a countryside hotel with excellent facilities for you and the horses. (40 km/25 mi)

Day 3: Hotel Hóp - Thingeyrar - Hvammur
Today you will explore the beauty of the Vatnsnes peninsula and follow the black dunes on Sigríðarstaðasandur toward the north. Just off shore, you can see Hvítserkur, a basalt rock formation that is a nesting place for many seabirds. This area is home to large numbers of seals and birds which rest and play on the beach. You will then cross Lake Hóp again, following a different route on the way back to the Thingeyrar Farm. You can enjoy bathing in geothermal water at a local swimming pool before you partake of a hearty dinner at Hvammur Farm, where you will stay overnight. (30 km/18.6 mi)

Day 4: Hvammur - Thingeyrar - Hvammur
On this last day of riding, you will take the horses back to Hvammur Farm, following good riding tracks ideal for the special gait of the Icelandic horse known as tölting. This time, on the eastern side of Vatnsdalur valley, you will pass the Hvammsfoss waterfall which is surrounded by impressive basalt columns. You can celebrate your successful return in the evening during a feast in the barn. (25 km/15.5 mi)

Day 5: Hvammur - Kjölur Highland Route - Reykjavík
Today you will say goodbye to the guides, and take a scheduled bus over Kjölur Highland Road back to Reykjavík. The bus will travel through the rugged wilderness of the Icelandic highland, stopping at the natural hot water pools at Hveravellir, where you can enjoy a dip. Along the way, you will see the majestic Hofsjökull and Langjökull glaciers and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, before reaching the well-known geyser area.

Knee-high rubber boots are recommended for this ride.
